The Costs Involved When Shopping Abroad

There have been a few references over the last few weeks of my impending trip to New York. Well the moment has finally arrived and I will be jetting off this Saturday. I have visited New York twice before, each time promising myself I would not be leaving my next trip so long. But several years later and I am excited again to be visiting this fabulous city once more.  I will be visiting with a friend who has not before been, for a week of sight-seeing, eating & drinking and not forgetting the very important shopping. I have been making lists for months, window-shopping here to decide which items I want to look out for. Hoping that I will find some amazing deals, with discounts that I am not able to find in my own country.

Of course you can not visit New York without a handsome chunk of money. I have been saving for a very long time, dipping in occasionally but frantically trying to make it back up again. And although I am happy with the amount I have managed to save up, I am also aware that it may not end up being quite enough – don't things always end up costing more than you had originally envisaged?  So I plan to take a credit card with me. This is quite a big step for me as I do not already own a credit card, in fact I must admit to not being very responsible generally with a credit card. Yes, they are good for emergencies, but to be honest, I have an emergency in my life most days – a pair of shoes, new handbag etc etc. As well as certain other worries of using a credit card abroad.

But that said, the pros of having the back up of a credit card far outweigh any cons to me (and I don't HAVE to use it, do I?) So I am making sure to use a credit card with a low APR,  when I was shopping around for my card I wanted to see the many options that are out there. Lots of the cards being offered on the high street have the added bonus of not charging abroad and some even have offers on a 0% balance transfer. So I will be able to shop til my heart's content, secure in the knowledge that I am financially covered for this trip.

  1. I hope you have a wonderful time and look forward to seeing pictures from your sightseeing and shopping!

  3. I would say the best use for a credit card aboard would be just incase you need healthcare. Could be a lifesaver.

  4. Have a great time. It would be awful if there was THAT ONE THING you couldnt quite afford but your credit card allowed you to do it. I am currently paying mine off from an amazing Paris trip :)
