Designer Highlight - Laura Johnston

I have posted previously about the work of up and coming designer Laura Johnston in the Graduate Fashion Show at Northumbria University last year. Her collection was my favourite and went on to win the Fenwick prize, where her fabulous tutu dress was available to buy in the French Salon in the store and was given pride of place in the store window. The signature gown was snapped up quickly regardless of the £595 price tag.

Laura is influenced by the 1950’s period, “It is a mix of structure and then femininity. I like to use a women’s shape – I love Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. The details of fabrics, facings, buttons and linings as well”.

Her degree show featured five pieces, with some tailored daywear and with the tutu dress being the most eye-catching, she was also asked to design the wedding dress for the final part of the show.

It is great for the North East of England to have such great talent. Laura hails from Yarm, Cleveland and would love to remain here and see her career flourish although it is difficult to have the opportunities that other areas of the country would bring. Hopefully the region will be able to hang on to this great talent.
